Selection Process

The selection for KPSC KAS Gazetted Probationers involves a rigorous multi-stage process designed to evaluate candidates comprehensively:

• Phase 1: Preliminary Examination - An objective-type (MCQ) screening test with two papers. Marks from Prelims are solely for shortlisting candidates for the Mains exam, not for final merit.
• Phase 2: Main Examination - A descriptive written test consisting of seven papers, including two qualifying language papers (Kannada and English) and five compulsory papers (Essay and General Studies I-IV).
• Phase 3: Personality Test (Interview) - Candidates who clear the Mains exam are called for an interview, which carries 25 marks. The final merit list is based on the combined scores of the Mains compulsory papers and the Personality Test (total 1,275 marks).

• Negative Marking: One-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for every wrong answer in the Prelims. No penalty for unattempted questions.
• Qualifying Papers: A minimum of 35% marks is required in each of the Kannada and English qualifying papers in Mains. Failure to qualify in these papers will disqualify candidates from the interview stage.
• Language of Exam: Prelims question papers are set in both Kannada and English. Mains papers are descriptive.
• Standard of Questions: General Mental Ability questions in Prelims are at the SSLC/10th standard level, while all other Prelims topics are at the degree level.

  • History of India, with emphasis on its social, economic, cultural and political aspects, and a focus on the Indian national movement with special emphasis on Karnataka
  • World Geography and Geography of India with a focus on Karnataka
  • Indian polity and economy, including the political system, rural development, planning, economic reforms, sustainable development, poverty alleviation, demographics and social sector initiatives

KAS Prelims Paper II Syllabus

• (A) General Studies related to State Importance
  • Current events of State importance and important State Government programmes
• (B) General Science & Technology, Environment & Ecology
  • Contemporary developments in science and technology and their implications, including everyday observations expected of a well-educated non-specialist
  • General issues on health, environmental ecology, biodiversity and climate change that do not require subject specialisation
• (C) General Mental Ability
  • Comprehension
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision making and problem solving
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.)
  • Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. - Class X/SSLC level)

KAS Mains Syllabus

The official notification confirms the paper structure for Mains (Kannada, English, Essay, and General Studies 1 to 4). • Master the Official Syllabus: Always begin by thoroughly understanding the official KPSC KAS syllabus. Map every topic to your study plan, especially for Paper II which combines state-specific current affairs with science and mental ability.
• Cultivate Karnataka-Specific Current Affairs: Maintain dedicated daily notes for both national/international and Karnataka-specific current events, as both Paper I and Paper II test current affairs.
• Practice with Negative Marking in Mind: Since Prelims has a 0.25 mark deduction for wrong answers, practice full-length mock tests to develop a strategy for attempting questions and knowing when to skip.
• Utilize General Mental Ability: Treat the General Mental Ability section as a scoring opportunity. Regular practice of basic numeracy and data interpretation (SSLC level) can secure quick and reliable marks in Paper II.
• Prioritize Language Qualifying Papers: Do not overlook the Kannada and English qualifying papers in Mains. A 35% qualifying threshold applies to each; failing either will bar you from the interview, regardless of your GS/Essay scores.
